Bonsoir, Mesdames et Messieurs. En tant que Ministre Conseiller de l’Ambassade du Salvador, j’ai le plaisir de participer au lancement de Mapalé Artes y Letras, une revue en espagnol dédiée à la culture et aux arts de l’Amérique latine. C’est la première fois qu’une revue de ce genre sera publiée au Canada.

For the last year, three people, Silvia Alfaro, Sergio Belluz and Clara Alfaro have worked relentlessly to produce a magazine with an international character with specialized contributors worldwide. They have found them in Canada, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and China, which makes this a high quality publication both in its content and in its presentation.

The spirit of Mapalé is to divulge and promote, as I have said, the culture and the arts of Latin America, but within a global context. This is why we find in its pages artists from all over the world who will contribute to the difficult task of recognizing the creativity of all those who fight to express themselves through the arts and literature.

Mapalé has no borders. It is from all and to all, inviting all artists, writers, and people interested in these fields to participate and make this magazine an intercultural meeting point.

Mapalé is a dynamic, interesting and humorous publication which is also what this event tonight is all about. Let this be then an evening of fun, of celebration and of learning about other cultures.

Para esta noche Mapalé ha seleccionado un grupo folklórico boliviano entre varios latinoamericanos: Nuevo Amanecer de Montreal; no sólo por el patrocinio de la Embajada de Bolivia en Canadá, sino por ser de un país de nuestra región con una historia extraordinaria y con una variedad cultural impresionante, la cual es desconocida por la gran mayoría, inclusive por sus propios vecinos. Por ejemplo, tengo entendido que Potosí, ciudad de Bolivia, fue la ciudad más poblada del mundo en 1650.  Siendo en esa época Bolivia la principal proveedora de plata del mundo parece ser que junto con Venecia fueron las dos ciudades más ricas del mundo. Además, Bolivia, como muchos otros países latinoamericanos, ha conservado una  riqueza folklórica que refleja no sólo su cultura precolombina sino los aportes de las diferentes culturas que han pasado por su región.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Silvia, Sergio and Clara for their vision and courage. All of us present know how very difficult it is to be able to publish this kind of magazine. I wish them all the best in their wonderful and well-timed project and ask all of you to subscribe to the magazine which you can do today after the inauguration.
