Ottawa. Guillermo Trejo presentará su primera exposición individual en Canadá como parte del Nuevo programa creado por SAW Gallery con el propósito de promover el talento local en la escena nacional. La obra de Guillermo Trejo ha sido extensamente exhibida en México. Actualmente realiza estudios de Maestría en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Ottawa. Sus reproducciones poéticas y puras trazadas de más de 60 noticias y titulares de primera plana serán presentadas junto a murales e impresiones, constituyendo un mundo poco familiar de medios dónde todas las noticias parecen llevar igual peso. Una imagen de manifestantes con puños alzados es asociada con la imagen de Justin Bieber levantando su mano en un concierto. Imágenes de policía, manifestantes y terroristas en negro son presentadas lado a lado como si tuviesen igual valor. Estas son algunas de los cientos de conexiones que Trejo elabora en su nueva obra. Chile's Atacama Desert is the driest place on earth. For astronomers its high altitude and lack of humidity provide the ideal atmosphere to peer into space, to look into the past and attempt to answer questions about the origins of the universe. The desert also provides an exemplary climate for the work of archaeologists, as the dryness prevents rotting and mummifies specimens intact. Near the astronomers' telescopes, which detect the oldest light in the universe, a group of women sift through the sand searching for any evidence of their loved ones. Hidden in the desert floors are the bones and body parts of the "disappeared" -remnants of the crimes of Pinochet's dictatorship. Febrero 3 a 24 - Toronto. Muse Gallery proudly exhibits the paintings of Nahúm Flores and the sculpture of Susan Valyi. Nahum Flores' mixed media paintings have the luminescent quality of an encaustic. This is a result of numerous exposed layers of paint that separate from each other, as well as by the liberally applied coats of gloss varnish. Embedded in each painting is photographic transfers of texture, this is combined with hand painted texture and tribally influenced black line work forming dense environments of animals, humans and vegetation. The work reflects Nahum's personal beliefs, and concern for the human condition, the devastation of cultures, and the natural environment. Nahúm is a Toronto based artist that was born in the Honduras and has had work featured in international exhibitions and fairs. Febrero 13 - Wakefield. Wakefield Film Festival. Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" -self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. All the proceeds will help support the Yahoskas Program in San Marcos Nicaragua.
